Yankees Stadium, home of the New York Yankees, has been rebuilt and the first regular-season game is scheduled to be played on April 16, 2009. Satellite Plumbing Corp, was contracted to install soda lines at the "new" Yankee Stadium. Drilling 4" diameters holes in stainless steel plates 1/4" thick; was required to get the job done. The Plumbers used an 18 volt cordless drill and a Champion Ct7 carbide tipped hole cutter to complete the entire job. The crew easily cut the steel plates in numerous Pepsi stands located throughout the stadium, in time and on scheduled for operation. Play ball!

Woodworking Craft Helps Unemployed New Yorkers

Woodworker Scott Peltzer, director of Brooklyn Woods, teaches unemployed and working poor how to be a woodworker like himself for free. After finishing his masters and and putting his talent to use in woodcraft, he decided to help others less fortunate to do the same. At Brooklyn Woods, men and women are trained in an eight week cabinetmaking program. The programs develops self confidence and motivation. The workshop is filled with tools students learn to use: machines for sawing, shaping, planing, and notching wood, and for attaching hinges, and tools for installing the finished products into kitchens. Brooklyn Woods is also getting Green and has been using materials like bamboo,and domestic hardwooods supplied by companies that avoid practices like clear-cutting forests. Once program is completed woodworker graduates are given 2 year job assistance. More than 125 woodworking and construction companies have employed program grads, who now number about 300.

The original PLS5 was introduced in 1995, representing the first truly self leveling five point laser for layout of plumb, level, and square. The PLS5 continues to remain the standard by which all multi-point laser tools are judged. Pacific Laser Systems has now replaced the PLS5 Laser with a new more smaller and durable self leveling point-to-point laser. All five points carry the same bright beams and all points have the same origin, no more offset. The New PLS5, as it is now called, is a pulsed laser which means the NEW PLS5 will be capable of transmitting its signal to a traditional rotary laser detector (like a PLS5X). Pricing for the New PLS5 is about the same as the original model, just better quality.

My neighbor finally got his hands on the new Milwaukee Digital Inspection Camera and has not put it down since. He loved the gadget so much he practically tried it everywhere. He looked over the garage, under the kitchen sink, and behind the cabinets; practically anything he could think of.

I give a thumbs up to Milwaukee for the M-Spector Digital Inspection 12 volt Cordless Camera. Primary Applications are Plumbers (Service): "Long-Distance" drain inspection. They also have available in two models- one that allows standard AA batteries (Milwaukee Tool 2300-20)and the one in picture which is powered by a 12-volt lithium-ion battery. The battery and charger that comes with this tool also works with the Milwaukee Tool 2401-22 12 Volt Lithium ion Cordless Compact Driver Power Tool. The Very Famous PLS 180 Laser

The PLS Laser comes in a plastic compact case and includes the following

The PLS 180 has very simple controls and on/off button, a pulse button, and light indicators.

When you press the on/off button you get a level beam, press again and get a plum beam, a third time and get a combination of plum and level. It’s that simple. There is also a way to override the self leveling function and use a perpendicular angle for those unique projects.

Now let’s talk about the detector. The detector basically helps locate the beam outdoors or when working in faint conditions. When aligned the detector omits a continuous tone as oppose to fast or slow beeps. There is also a way to mute the annoying beeping sound and use the arrow on the detector screen instead. When aligned with the beam the arrow turns into a horizontal line.

From what I have heard the price of steel in China heavily influences steel costs and is impacting the bottom line of virtually every construction project.

The price of steel has skyrocketed primarily because of the large demand for the product in China. As the world's most populous country continues to expand, the requests for new buildings increase, resulting in a construction boom exploding in cities like Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai, says Daniel Meyer from Business First.

From 1997 to 2003, China increased steel consumption from 100 million tons to nearly 260 million tons; the latter a figure that is nearly double the total consumption in the U.S.

At this point it is unknown what the future direction of prices will be because of uncertainty when it comes to the long-term factors of price changes within the steel industry.

The best Ace Tool can do for our customers is to try to get them price breaks when they buy a skid of nails. A skid consist of anywhere from 40 -48 boxes of nails. So if a box of nails costs $30 and you buy a skid of nails for $25 a box. This may last for the next couple of months and in the next couple of months when the same box now costs $35 you still have it for $25.

Belt Speed – The speed of the belt is one of the most important factors of a belt sander. It is this feature that mainly determines how fast stock is removed.

Power - Along with speed, power is also extremely important. The belt sander motor needs to be strong enough not to bog down when aggressive sanding is required.

Weight - weight is an important factor with a belt sander. If it weighs too little, the sander will not work aggressively enough or the end-user will have to apply a lot of pressure, risking gouging. If the sander is too heavy it can be very cumbersome carrying it around and make vertical sanding more tiresome than necessary.

Noise Level – in order to provide the maximum amount of comfort to the end user the noise
level should be below 90dB.

Cord Length – A good belt sander needs room to run. There is nothing worse than having to use an extension cord and have the bulky end of the cord get caught on your piecework piece.

Balance – How a sander is balanced is extremely important. If the sander’s weight is not evenly distributed it will sand the material unevenly. One of the best ways to test if a sander is balanced is to see how evenly it sands a piece of laminated particle board.

All I know is that lithium-ion rocks! Did you know that the lithium-ion battery weighs 40% less which makes your work load easier? It is 30% more powerful and they do not suffer from memory effect. Lithium-ion has a 280% longer life time and it charges quicker as well. These batteries have revolutionized the power tool industry. Quality Of A Saw Blade

What are the major contributing features that determine the quality of a saw blade?

The body, often called the plate, is the platform in which everything else is positioned. The plate must be absolutely flat to run true. The plate must be processed in a manner that treats and tensions to a point of extreme durability. This will enable the blade to continue to run true even when exposed to rigorous cutting, like when it is fully embedded in the material. The process of grinding and sharpening the tooth contributes to the quality and performance of the blade. Lower quality saw blades are made from ground and sharpened steel. They are adequate, but it is well worth upgrading to high quality carbide-tipped blades, which are mostly made of steel- but have cutting teeth of tungsten carbide, a strong, hard, heat-resistant ceramic.

The carbide tooth plays a very important role in the performance and life of the blade. Carbide comes in many different compositions and grades. These carbide tips are brazed onto the blade’s steel body. They are more durable and hold an edge longer; the tips are wider than the body, which makes the blade less likely to bind in the cut.

Shapes of Teeth Configurations

Flat Top (FT) – This configuration is used for ripping, because of its deep gullets and aggressive hook angle. Not suited for crosscutting. The tops of the teeth are ground straight across like a rip saw.

Alternate Top Bevel (ATB) - This style produces smooth crosscuts and aggressive ripping.
Teeth alternate right and left for faster, cleaner cuts. Every other tooth is ground at an angle toward the center of the blade, like a crosscut saw.

Alternative Top Bevel & Raker – similar to the plain ATB, this style is found on most combinations blades serving as an all purpose, cross cut/ rip blade. The Rakers purpose is to follow-up after the other teeth and clean-up or “rake”, thus the name – Raker.

Triple Chip (TC) – Similar to the FT, but every other tooth has its top corners beveled off and the heights of the teeth alternate. Designed not to dull quickly, these blades are suited for materials such as laminates, acrylic, or non-ferrous metals.

Blades for More Specialized Applications

Thin Kerf Rip Blade – Known for its steep hook angle, deep gullets, and few, flat top ground teeth. These blades are thinner than standard ones. This makes less work for the saw and less wood lost to the cut.

Combination Blade – There are expansion slots cut into the rim, which help reduce noise and vibration.

Abrasive Blade – Used in hop saws and miter saws to cut ferrous and non-ferrous metals. These blades are available in different tasks, and are made from resin-bonded aluminum oxide or silicon carbide.

Diamond Blades – used to cut masonry, tile, stone, and concrete. Diamond grit is soldered or laser-welded to the rim of the blade. The rim may be segmented or continuous. Some blades must be flushed with water during use to clean the kerf, cool blade, and allow for deeper cuts. Others can be used dry, but take care to avoid overheating.

Dado- Used in a table saw to cut a long, continuous groove in a piece of wood, known as a dado. The set consists of a pair of outer blades and a group of splitters, which are sandwiched between blades. CMT got excellent

Irwin has introduced a new player in the world of saw blades with the introduction of the Marathon with WeldTec. This new saw blade has Welded carbide teeth and they claim 30% stronger tooth bond that promises you longer life. UC2 (submicro grain) carbide teeth are 70% tougher than standard carbide teeth and are sharpened to finer, more durable cutting edges that stay sharper longer. Irwin uses E.O.T. grind technology.

Braze vs. Weld

Standard brazed blades use a breezing material, which acts like a glue, to join the carbide tooth to the steel plate. This bond is only as strong as the brazing material, which softens as heat builds up during a cut and can cause tooth loss upon impact.

Marathon with WeldTec has welded carbide teeth. Welding fuses the carbide teeth to the steel plate, which makes the bond as strong as the base material. This bond is unaffected by heat build up and results in better tooth retention.

The MakBlade

Makita has also introduced a high quality, thin kerf, carbide-tipped blade for fast, efficient cutting in various materials. The MakBlade is 7 ¼” with 16 teeth, Makita claims that their technology produces a blade that is faster, stronger, and quieter.
